DAY 1 – DEODERANT

Alright here is day 1 of my 365 days of purging chemicals from our home. First up… deodorant.

This one was fairly easy since I was in the process of doing this anyways. I recently read an article about how the aluminum from antiperspirants collects in breast tissue and is believed to be increasing rate of breast cancer in men and women. Parabens in the deodorant are also absorbed and  can increase your risk. Women are particularly at risk because shaving can nick the skin and increase the rate that these toxins are absorbed. They also affect estrogen levels which has been linked to breast cancer. (You can read more about this here: http://www.cancer.org/cancer/cancercauses/othercarcinogens/athome/antiperspirants-and-breast-cancer-risk)

Here is what I tossed out today. Not saying that these are any worse or better than anything else on the market.

I replaced it with a witch hazel and essential oil spray deodorant. I have tried to make a couple paste type deodorants and the baking soda irritates my skin. I love this one and even in 30’C heat I didn’t have to reapply it today.

DIY SPRAY DEODERANT
4oz Glass Spray Bottle
Fill half way with witch hazel
Fill the rest with water
10 drops Melaleuca essential oil
10 drops Frankincense essential oil
10 drops Lavender essential oil
Shake and apply

I made a similar spray for Chris with some Cypress Essential oil added for a ‘Manlier Scent’.

Feeling pretty good about day 1 of our detox. Be sure to follow me on Instagram for all 365 posts this year @mommyessentially. I will do blog posts with recipes like this one from time to time as well.
